Cuneo

Cuneo is a city and a province in Piemonte, in northern Italy; the city is the capital of Italy’s third-largest province. It stands 534 meters above sea level on a terrace at the confluence of the Stura and Gesso rivers, that gives the old part of the city its characteristic wedge shape. The city’s topographical features and geographical position have played a crucial role in its expansion and economic development: the first because it offered a natural form of defense and paved the way for modern progress; the second because the city is on the route to south-eastern France (via the Colle di Tenda and Maddalena mountain passes), and at a strategic point between the plain and the southern Alps. Tourism plays an important role in the whole district, which offers unique and beautiful landscapes, especially in the districts of Langhe and Roero with their vineyard-covered hillsides and numberous, feudal castles. Some towns in the area worth mentioning for their artistic/cultural importance are: Alba, Saluzzo, Mondovì, Bra, Dogliani.
